Veteran actor Prem Chopra, known for his remarkable career spanning over 350 films, recently revisited an emotional chapter from his early days, crediting his first big break to Sardar Singh Suri—a man whose life story is no less than a cinematic script.

Prem Chopra, who became iconic for his villainous roles while also excelling as a hero and character actor, began his journey with the Punjabi film “Aeh Dharti Punjab Di.” Produced by Sardar Singh Suri under the banner of Suri Films, the movie marked Chopra’s debut as a lead actor and proved to be a turning point in his career.

Sardar Singh Suri’s life was a testament to resilience and ambition. Originally from Rawalpindi, he migrated to India after Partition and eventually settled in Mumbai. Starting out as a taxi driver, he worked relentlessly and expanded his livelihood from one taxi to three. However, driven by a larger dream, Suri made a bold move—he sold all three taxis to finance the production of “Aeh Dharti Punjab Di.”

The gamble paid off. The film became a commercial success and earned widespread recognition. It not only established Prem Chopra as a leading man but also won critical acclaim, reportedly bagging nine awards. However, behind this success lay a painful reality.

According to reports, Suri was denied his rightful share of the film’s earnings due to a partner’s alleged misconduct. Despite the film’s success, he faced severe financial hardship. In a striking irony, Suri could not even afford to travel to Delhi to receive the awards associated with his own film.

Following this setback, Suri stepped away from film production and dedicated his life to social and religious service. He played a key role in establishing the Four Bungalow Gurudwara Sahib, which today stands as a major center of faith and community service.

On his recent death anniversary, an event was held at the Gurudwara where Prem Chopra paid tribute, saying, “I can never forget Sardar Suri saab. He gave me my first big identity. He was not just a producer, but a truly kind human being. His life continues to inspire.”

Sardar Singh Suri’s journey—from struggle and sacrifice to selfless service—remains a powerful reminder that true legacy is built not just through success, but through resilience, humility, and humanity.
